Is Your New Year’s Resolution A Sustainable One?
As a professional in the fitness industry, I’m used to seeing large amounts of people looking to rev-up their fitness regimen in the beginning of the year. Goals are set, resolutions are made, and there’s always a flood of people at the gym come the first weeks of January. It’s human nature for us to want to better ourselves – but why does that passion and fire to “get fit” only last for a few short months?
I personally encourage my students to build a sustainable practice that they can maintain throughout the year. This helps the individual keep their routines fresh, new, and exciting. I’ve found over the years by implementing realistic goals, and sustainable programs for my students, they constantly find the motivation and come back hungry for more. Everyone’s journey is different, but one thing that is a constant is the joy they discover as they get closer to their goals and see lasting results.
The point is- find what works FOR YOU. If you’re someone who can’t find the joy in a gym membership, take yourself out on weekly hikes to get your heart rate up, and make the top of that hill or mountain be your goal. If you’re recovering from an injury, explore other mobility and movement options ( as long as advised by a professional ). I personally find so much joy in taking my routines out into nature; I feel alive, invigorated, and it allows me to explore unexpected elements that challenge my body, mind and spirit.
Instead of focusing on short term goals and short lived resolutions, I invite you to ask yourself what is it that works for YOU? What excites you and encourages you to be the best possible version of yourself? What is it that makes you want to get out of bed and hit the ground running? Once you put the elements of what you love together, you will find that it all starts to work for you rather than against you.
